THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR
It’s 1642! The English Civil War begins…
Acting on ‘the Divine Right of Kings’ (believing he was a representative of God) the ruling King Charles I decides to rule the country without a Parliament. Marrying a Catholic Queen also angered Parliament, who were mostly Puritan (strict ‘no-frills’ protestants). Before you know it Oliver Cromwell (on the side of Parliament) has declared War on the King. Cromwell sets up an army (called Roundheads) and the resulting civil war between the King’s Cavillers sees more people dead than in both the first and second world wars combined. King Charles I is beheaded and England became a ‘republic’ during which, back-to-basics Cromwell actually banned Christmas. After 12 years the public decide they’ve had enough and become a Monarchy once again.
